How it works

ProMeris contains the active flea control ingredient, metaflumizone. This compound features an exclusive mode of action that attacks the flea?s nervous system by blocking neuronal sodium channels, which results in paralysis and death. In addition to metaflumizone, ProMeris contains amitraz, well recognized to provide broad-spectrum control of ticks.

Cautions

Side effects may occur if product is licked after application. When used between the shoulder blades, as directed, licking isn?t an issue. Amitraz is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Do not use any other MAOI products such as Preventic Collar, Mitaban Dip, Anipryl, or Selegiline while using ProMeris for Dogs or Cats.

Powerful Preventative and Quick Acting for Emergencies - When our veterinarian suspected that our 10 month old Australian Cattle/Lab mix may potentially be having a recurrence of demodectic mange (a condition she had when she was rescued at 4 months old), she prescribed Promeris immediately. If she was in fact having a recurrence, then Promeris successfully managed to stop it. Our dog has retained her beautiful coat without any incident. However... When our dog was recently exposed to a litter of 2 month old puppies that were rescued from an abusive and careless owner, she contracted fleas. I was surprised to see that the ProMeris didn't prevent the fleas from infesting being that she had her dosage three weeks prior, but another dosage on our vet's advice did the trick. Within a few hours, I noticed fleas dropping off her, sluggishly trying to crawl away. They were easy to kill at that point. Within the day she was clear of fleas. Overall, I find Promeris to be very effective in its advertised usage. Fleas didn't stand a chance, and it may have prevented a possible mange outbreak as well. The dosing is simple, you couldn't possibly make a dosage mistake since each of the 3 doses is perfectly measured for the size of the dog you have. If you are in doubt, especially if your dog is teetering between two of the designated weight classes available for purchase, play it safe and go with the lesser dose. You're much better off underdosing your dog rather than overdosing. There are some drawbacks to Promeris...namely I was surprised that the preventative measures didn't work. Granted she was close to her next scheduled dose, but Promeris is intended primarily as a preventative. Also, the smell of this chemical concoction is overpowering. My wife and I both suffered watering eyes, while my wife experience nausea and I developed a migraine by being exposed to it. Our dog, more importantly, suffered side effects as well. This is the internet, and people who have dogs that experience no side effects will be the first to go into defensive rages saying that you are dosing your dog wrong, but that's not true. The wide array of side effects reported differ between breeds, sizes, age and weight. The worst of the side effects was incontinence...for 2 out of 3 doses she had several accidents in the house and was just as perplexed as we were when she suddenly squatted without warning. During all 3 doses, she experienced terrible lethargy and a loss of appetite. The incontinence lasted one day, while the lethargy lasted for 2 - 3 days. Your dog should always be treated like a member of your family, so if you think the side effects are too much, discontinue use and see your veterinarian about alternatives. ProMeris is very strong and may not be suitable for all dogs. Beware if you have allergies or are sensitive to chemical odors as well. Pros: Great as an emergency flea killer Works well for mange and other parasitic skin conditions Limited but considerable effectiveness for certain types of fungal skin infections 1 dose per month Cons: Side effects such as lethargy, incontinence, disorientation, vomiting and loss of appetite are common Overpowering odor could disturb or even sicken people Area of coat where product is applied is very grimey and sticky for up to a week (primarily because you may need to wait at least a week before bathing your dog after application)

Better results than Frontline & Advantix - We've been waging war on fleas for the past several months. I've spent considerable time and money trying to beat the odds and keep my four dogs from being eaten alive. Tried Frontline PLUS twice, and both times I saw fleas reinfest within a week. Advantix seemed ineffective altogether, as I never did see an absence of the fleas upon inspection. I tried ProMeris cautiously after seeing some "scary" reviews online. I administered the correct dosages to all four of my dogs (large pit bull, lab/beagle mix, havanese and a pekingese) and monitored all of them. Within 4 hours, I noted far less scratching/biting, was unable to locate any living fleas upon inspection, and did not note ANY lethargy, vomiting or other adverse reactions from any of the four dogs. So far, ProMeris appears to be more effective the Frontline, and faster acting. The longevity of the repellant remains to be seen; but I will update with that information. I'm inclined to believe certain breeds may be sensitive to ProMeris (as with any of the others) and user error likely results in the animal ingesting the product through self-grooming.

Helped dog with demodectic mange - We fostered a dog with noncontagious mange and this helped him heal without a chemical dip. It doesn't smell bad either when applied, which I was worried about, and no fleas or ticks either. Someone recommended it for dogs with mange and it did the job, though be prepared for it to take several months.
